Melbourne City’s progressive action triumphs: Winners of Inspire 2022 Diversity and Inclusion Award
Held in the Barossa Valley in early May this year, the network attended the Telstra CoLLAB event, where the Inspire Awards were presented. Recognising the innovation, ambition and positive change happening across the TBTC channel, these awards were launched to pay tribute to the Telstra Partners actioning this change.
Our team at TBTC Melbourne City were honoured to be finalists for the Diversity and Inclusion Award, and were even more thrilled when we were announced as the winners! We’ve worked incredibly hard as a business to continuously grow in this space and could not be prouder of our TBTC team. That’s why we wanted to share the details behind this award so those in our community can celebrate with us.
What is the Diversity and Inclusion Award?
As Australia’s leading telecommunications company, Telstra serves millions of diverse customers. We recognise the value of having diverse employees who represent their unique perspective to not only better serve our customers, but to progress our thinking and actions to create a more inclusive workplace.
Diversity of thought drives innovation, which is essential to achieving our greater business strategy and supports our purpose to build a connected future so everyone can thrive. It’s about being passionate to create an environment that’s inclusive and supportive; a place where everyone can truly be themselves, no matter their race, religion, sexuality, gender or age.
This award is about championing an environment across the whole Telstra network where people feel safe, valued and empowered to speak up.
How Melbourne City are debunking stigmas to build a more inclusive and diverse workplace
In addition to the diversity of our TBTC Melbourne City team, the effort, care and support we espouse across our daily operations is what has set a foundation for change and supported our inclusion and diversity initiatives. Here are some of the ways we’ve been breaking the status quo and empowering our employees.
Empowering women in tech
We have a passion for promoting women in technology. In an industry that has been dominated by men for years, we’ve been closing the gap with close to an even 1:1 female/male team ratio and no intention of stopping there.
We proudly employ women in leadership, tech and engineering roles, with structured pathways and initiatives like Girls Ignite, SisterWorks and Women Rising. We work side by side with women of all ages to help provide tangible opportunities for these individuals to break into the industry and progress up the ranks.
Proving that age is just a number
We employ individuals on merit. At our core, we believe that it doesn’t matter if you’re starting out or wrapping up – age isn’t a factor when it comes to determining an employee’s value to our business.
Our team’s age demographic ranges from late teens to sixties, proving that age really is just a number.
Just like our wider Telstra network, our TBTC Melbourne City team loves to celebrate and embrace different cultures. We pride ourselves on knowing our teammates on a personal level, and getting to know someone’s culture can represents a large portion of who they are as a person.
We take every opportunity to celebrate culture and learn about different perspectives. From Diwali, to Christmas and Halloween, to International Women’s Day and team inspired International Food Days – every chance we get to come together, celebrate and support each other is a chance to connect not just colleagues but as people.
